XYBASE VENTURES INTO PROVIDING MEDICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM SOLUTION

Petaling Jaya, 18 June 2003 - XYBASE is proud to announce the successful development of a medical information system for Universiti Putra Malaysia, which has gone live. The system, simply called UPM e-Klinik is a complete and comprehensive information system that takes care of the medical information needs of the students, staff as well the general public within the compounds of the campus.

"It took us about 8 months to develop the e-Klinik system including the User Acceptance Testing and Functional Testing backed by a team of only 15 professionals," said En. Abdul Muhaimy Shafee, the XYBASE Project Manager currently based at UPM.

The e-Klinik system is built as a web-based application, which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Primarily, it caters for medical and dental consultations. This system is integrated with other systems within UPM namely IHRAMS, which is the Human Resource and Payroll system, SMP, which is the student information system and EIS which is the statistical reporting system. The system integrates data, which are tabulated for record purposes, complaints and to search for information.

"We are now undergoing the provisional acceptance testing for the next one and half months to ensure that the system runs smoothly," said En. Zainuddin Georges Abdullah, Chief Operating Officer of XYBASE MSC (M) Sdn. Bhd. and the Project Director for UPM e-Klinik project.

e-Klinik is comprised of the following 9 sub-systems:

  • PMS - Patient Management System
  • PhIMS - Pharmaceutical Information Management System
  • RMS - Resource Management System
  • LIMS - Laboratory Information Management System
  • RIMS - Radiology Information Management System
  • SIMS - Statistical Information Management System
  • PQMS - Patient Queuing Management System
  • CMS - Calling Management System
  • Medical check-up Module.

The UPM e-Klinik is accessible via the UPM intranet.

Among the benefits of the e-Klinik system is that it enables the clinic consultation and medication processes to be as paper-less as possible, from patient information, medication disbursement, setting appointments to view of stock level of drugs and online reporting. Patients no longer have to carry their medical papers from one division of the clinic to another. All the information is disseminated via a workflow within the portal.

For example, instead of writing an x-ray instruction on a form and getting the patient to pass the form to the x-ray department, the radiographer can access the instruction via the e-Klinik application. All records are kept in the e-Klinik database. This ensures records are updated instantly and are kept securely.

"As with the case of many other projects, the common problem is user acceptance and also the migration process from the current system to e-Klinik system" said Zainuddin. "One way to overcome this by providing a comprehensive training programme to ensure that all identified trainees are well equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge for them to utilize, operate and handle the UPM e-Klinik" added Zainuddin.

The e-Klinik system runs on Sun Fire 280R Server, which operates on Sun Solaris 8 Operating System alongside the Oracle 9i RDBMS and Orion Application server. The entire system is developed using Oracle 9i J Developer. XYBASE has a pool of experience and skills in developing on Oracle platforms for many years. The e-Klinik system is a web-based and can be accessed using Microsoft Internet Explorer.

XYBASE is confident of the success of this system at UPM and hopes that it is adopted at other medical institutions.

"We are proud of our impressive portfolio of clients and what we have developed successfully for them. The kernel of our success is our documented quality process that stresses continuous improvement, coupled with our experience to provide precise and accurate services to our clients" said En. Zainuddin on the e-Klinik project at UPM.
